BOSTON (AP) - Some animal advocates are questioning the salaries of top
administrators at the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals at a time the nonprofit is closing shelters.
Four of the top five officials at the MSPCA make more than
$200,000 annually, including chief executive Carter Luke who made
more than $340,000 in 2007, according to the organization's latest
tax-exempt filing.
Joyce Godsey of the Animal Rescue of Merrimack Valley tells
The Boston Globe that some of that money would be better spent
caring for animals.
MSPCA spokesman Brian Adams says the salaries are based on
comparable pay of nonprofit executives across the country.
The organization this month announced the closure of shelters
in Brockton, Martha's Vineyard and Springfield.
