(WWLP) - A sloppy mix of snow, freezing rain and sleet made for messy commuting in western Massachusetts today.

Into this evening, an icy slush remains on the roads.

A 22News crew saw several close calls on Springfield roads in a short time. DPW crews continued to treat the streets and sidewalks.

In Greenfield, 22News reporter Shane Symolon found the mess from the ice storm was worse than many thought it would be.

To Ruth Pagano, it was another beautiful winter day in Greenfield. She told 22News, "Since I can do this at my leisure, I think it's fun. I'm having a good time out here shoveling and cleaning off my car. I like New England, and this is really New England weather."

Not everyone was quite so pleased. Thomas Hughes of Greenfield said, "It was slippery. Lots of places didn't get rid of the ice or snow. It was messy out there."

Truck driver Charles Emery said he wishes it were snow: "At least you know what you've got with snow. You've got a little bit of traction. With the ice, you've got no traction at all. If you drive a truck like I'm driving, you're all over the road."
