BOSTON (AP) - There were 124 passengers on Northwest Airlines Flight 59 when
it left the Netherlands. There were 125 when it landed in Boston.
A passenger on the plane went into labor and gave birth to an
apparently healthy baby girl during Wednesday's eight-hour
trans-Atlantic flight. Massport spokesman Phil Orlandella says the
plane landed without incident at Logan Airport and mother and baby
were taken to Massachusetts General Hospital.
Two doctors on the flight helped with the mid-air delivery.
Dr. Paresh Thakkar, a family physician from Methuen, called the
experience wonderful. Dr. Natarajan Raman, an oncologist from
Minneapolis, said many other passengers on the plane offered to
help in any way they could.
Orlandella said for customs' purposes, the baby was
considered a Canadian citizen because she was born in Canada's
airspace. He could not confirm media reports that the mother was a
Ugandan national.
