SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A 200 pound pet chimpanzee attacks its owner's friend, leaving her in critical condition. Local residents react to this chilling tragedy.

Should people be able to own wild animals as pets? It's illegal to own most wild animals here in Massachusetts. But, since most state laws vary, it is easy to transport illegal pets into the bay state. Local MSPCA law enforcement officer Christine Allenberg says that if people get caught with illegal pets, they can face fines and prosecution.

Not only is it illegal, Allenberg says that it can be inhumane since many people cannot provide proper veterinary care or habitats for most wild animals.

Local residents had mixed reactions as to whether or not people should own exotic pets. Andrew Bogacz of Southampton said "If people want to have wild animals, they should be able to have wild animals." Moira McKenna of Holyoke said "I feel sorry for both the animal and the friend. And I think it's a bad decision."
