(WWLP) - That salmonella outbreak is raising many people's concerns about eating their favorite peanut butter-filled foods. But one girls' organization that sells near-legendary peanut butter cookies is telling the public to rest assured their product is safe.
The Girl Scouts, who for decades have sold cookies to raise
money for their activities, say their peanut butter-based products
present no danger.
"They've been audited by the FDA; they've gone to the plant
and they sampled cookies and found no contamination and verified
none of our peanut products were coming from the supplier, [which
is] called Peanut Corporation of America", says Suzanne Smiley, who
is the CFO of Girl Scouts of Central And Western Mass.
So far there have been 470 people in 43 states reported
sick,and six deaths, due to salmonella poisoning.
The peanut products made by Peanut Corporation of America are
not sold directly to consumers, but distributed to institutions and
food companies. But the FDA is saying most peanut butter sold in
jars at supermarkets appears to be safe. For a complete list of
