SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The MSPCA Animal Care and adoption center will be open just two
more weeks, as the city's other shelter prepares to take on a
bigger burden.
There are less cats than there used to be at the MSPCA Animal
Care & Adoption Center.
There will be even fewer animals at the center after Wednesday.
That's when the MSPCA will stop taking in new animals, but it
will continue to adopt animals out through the closing of the day
on March 26th. Any animal not adopted when the center closes, will
be bought to the one of the MSPCA's other facilities.
As the MSPCA is winding down it's shelter operation, the city
operated, Thomas J. O'Connor Animal Control & Adoption Center
is ramping up to take in more animals.
At a hearing, for next year's O'Connor budget, Barbara Hays,
the Executive Director of the shelter said that animal advocates
are now looking at privatizing the O'Connor, setting up a
non-profit shelter.
That influx of new animals will come at a time when Springfield
is making major budget cuts. Anyone who would like to make a
donation can do so, to the Thomas J. O'Connor Foundation, 627
Cottage Street,
Springfield 01104.
Make sure you state that your contribution is for the
foundation.
You can also contact the O'Connor Center at 781-1484.
