Juvenile arrested for school acid bombs

Asst. Principal sent to hospital with acid burn

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - An 8th grade student is under arrest after two acid bombs were discovered in a stairwell of Chestnut Accelerated Middle School on Plainfield Street in Springfield.

Just after 1:45pm on Friday, Springfield Police and Fire responded to the school.

Upon arrival, one of the acid bombs had exploded.

Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney told 22News a Chestnut School Assistant Principal was taken to Baystate Medical Center where she was later released for minor chemical burns after touching one of the acid bombs.

The acid bombs consisted of a plastic soda bottle filled with a household liquid plumbing chemical, tin foil, and water.

In an earlier news release, Springfield Public Schools identified two individuals involved in this incident.

As of Friday night, Springfield Police have arrested an 8th grader from the school in relation with this incident.

The 15-year-old juvenile was charged with possession of an incendiary device, and disrupting school in session.

Police determined that the student set the device to disrupt the school day on a Friday afternoon; before the school breaks for winter vacation.

The name of the juvenile will not be released.
