Update: Student stabbed in Amherst dorm

AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) - Police say they're still investigating the stabbing of a student in his Amherst Dorm Room.

In a media release sent to 22News, Amherst Police say at 1:04am Sunday, the Amherst Police Department was called to the Crossett Dormatory at Amherst College.

There they found the 20-year-old victim, stabbed in the chest and back multiple times.

The male victim was taken to Baystate Medical Center where he was listed in fair condition on Monday morning.

He is expected to survive his injuries, and is listed in fair condition as of Sunday evening.

Police identified the suspect as Marcus Smith, 21, of Roxbury, MA.

Amherst College officials tell 22News, Smith is not a student at the College.

Smith is charged with Assault and Battery with a dangerous weapon.

Smith was also transported to Cooley Dickinson Hospital where he was treated and released for a hand injury.

Smith is currently being held at the Hampshire County House of Correction in lieu of $25,000 bail.

He is expected to appear in Eastern Hampshire District Court on Monday for arraignment.

Students in the dorm say they heard a fight break out during a registered party.

Sam Friend lives in the dorm and told 22News he was at the party.

He says dorm parties are usually very safe.

"This was different because there were so many kids from different schools, and it was kind of rowdy down there, but most rowdy party's don't go that far," says Friend.

Other students say they were shocked that there was so much violence in their dorm.

"I absolutely feel safe in my dorm and I always have before. "I'm sure the school will react accordingly and make us all feel safer," says Tyler Tory-Murphy.

Amherst Police say the incident is still under investigation.
