SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - After serving the area for 95 years, the MSPCA on Union Street
in Springfield will shut its doors for good at the end of the day,
putting about a dozen employees out of a job.
The economic crisis has taken a serious toll on the animal
shelter. The organization lost more than $11 million in 2008
because of the economic downturn.
MSPCA President Carter Luke made the announcement in February
that the Springfield shelter was too expensive to operate. The
shelter lost $1 million in 2008 alone.
Also closing will be MSPCA shelters in Brockton and
Martha’s Vineyard.
Animals that are in need of adoption center in the area will
now be placed in other shelters across the state.
If you do find a stray animal, you are advised to bring it to
the Thomas J. O' Connor Animal Control on Cottage Street in
Springfield.
Local law enforcement will continue to investigate all cases
of suspected animal cruelty.
