Dakin Society set to help with animal transfer

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Some of the animals currently housed in the Springfield MSPCA will be transported to the Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society when the center closes on March 31st.

The influx of animals to that society in Leverett is causing animal shelters like the Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society and others to form a plan when it comes to housing the influx of new animals.

Last year the MSPCA in Springfield took in over 6,000 animals. The Dakin shelter only took in about 1,300.

"I think we need to sit down and re-examine what our priorities are and how we can help to best serve the animals left un-served if we and other organizations don't step up to the plate," said Lesley Harris of the Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society.

The society told 22News that because of the overpopulation of cats in the city, felines will probably be the most affected animal by the Springfield MSPCA's closure.
