WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Our country's foreclosure crisis isn't just hurting families, but its also impacting pets.
Across the country many family pets are getting abandoned when houses are going in foreclosure. But local realtors from Century 21 Real Estate offices are doing their part to help save some of these pets left behind.
The "No Pet Left Behind" project created by local realtors is working in conjunction with the Animal Shelter Renovations to raise money to build a no-kill shelter in western Massachusetts. Their goal is to place the animals into permanent homes and to save the pets' lives.
"These animals are being left behind in these abandoned homes to fend for themselves and in a lot of cases they're starving, dehydrated, sometimes they're being found dead. We are really trying to work hard to save these animals," said realtor April Cantell.
The local realtors told us they are donating a portion of their commission they make on a home sale to go towards saving these pets.
