SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Forest Park residents had the chance Wednesday night to see a major national developer's plans for the long-vacant Longhill Gardens residential complex in Springfield.

Winn Development presented their finalized proposal to nearly 100 neighbors at the Forest Park Middle School.

Springfield City Councilor James Ferrera said there's fear among some of his constituents that the complex will turn into section-eight housing.

"Surrounding communities do not take on their fair share of these types of housing and it's unfortunate that Springfield has become the dumping ground of these types of housings," he said.

Others are encouraged there'll be an upgraded security system and off-street parking.

"They're tearing down some of the buildings, going from 220 to about 125 is definitely a benefit for the neighborhood. Springfield is a diverse city bringing in a diverse people at the bottom of the hill. It fits right in with what the city is doing," development supporter Sandra Collins said.

Winn Development tried to reassure the neighbors with a presentation showing that they are an award-winning property manager, managing 70,000 in 20 states. They say the renovated Longhill Gardens will rent in the range of $500 to $820 per month.
