(WWLP) - High temperatures typically reach the lower 80s in the middle of August. Forecasts, though, are for highs in the upper 80s and lower 90s this weekend.

The hottest hours of the say are usually between 10 am and 4 pm. Staying safe in the heat doesn't need to be a challenge. Here are some tips:

  • If possible, exercise early in the morning or in the evening when it's cooler.
  • If you're sweating, you're losing fluids. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
  • And if you choose to beat the heat inside, be sure you keep the area well ventilated.
  • Closing the blinds will help keep the temperature down indoors.
  • Never, never, never leave children or pets in the car alone. Research from San Francisco State University showed that on a hot, sunny day, the temperature inside your car can be 40 to 50 degrees hotter than the outside.
