SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - 17 year-old Sabis International Charter School
wrestler, Olajuwon Somerville-Mitchell, had a heart attack
after a match and is now hospitalized at Baystate Medical Center in
Springfield.
Sabis Athletic Director Tom Campagna told 22News it happened
at the school on Wednesday night right after a varsity wrestling
match.
Campagna said the student finished wrestling a three-round
match and there was nothing out of the ordinary. Twenty-five
minutes later the student was sitting outside in the main lobby
outside the gymnasium when he collapsed.
He was attended to by coaches of the middle school program
who are wrestling parents. One is a Springfield fireman, Miguel
DelValle and the other. Gary Poehler is a Granby police officer --
both are trained in CPR and use of the AED defibrillator.
Campagna told 22News there was no pulse felt on the student
when the AED was administered, but they got a pulse back after
quickly using the AED and by doing CPR and rescue breathing.
Somerville-Mitchell will undergo surgery on Monday and is
expected to make a full recovery. Doctors said he won't be
able to participate in contact sports for the rest of his life.
