NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - One Hampshire County school isn't taking any chances when it comes to the latest salmonella scare. The Hadley school district is removing all peanut butter crackers from their cafeterias.
Hadley Food Service Director Diane Zak pullled all Austin Peanut Butter crackers off Hopkins Academy cafeteria shelves.
"They are to be destroyed, to be put in the dumpster, destroyed, every package opened and put down the garbage disposal," she said.
Following USDA guidelines, Hopkins still offers peanut butter and jelly sandwiches at lunch because Zak believes commerical peanut butter is not a risk.
But the Bridge Street Elementary School in Northampton isnt taking any chances; it's gone completely peanut-free.
Instead, lunch lady Barbara Rakaska said they use sunflower butter, the price of which is double that of peanut butter, but with zero risk of salmonella.
