LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) - Longmeadow's Greg Copeland is one of two boys to win two Western Mass track and field championships. Mahar's Trent George is the other. The Longmeadow senior and 22News athlete of the week won the 110 meter hurdles and the pole vault.
"It feels great, I had a good week of practice, and I worked hard all year", says Copeland.
Copeland's specialty is the pole vault. After winning Western Mass by more than two feet, he finished 3rd in the state and 4th in New England. Copeland says 10 years worth of training in another sport helped him excel in the pole vault
"Gymnastics helped a lot, it made me fearless pretty much", says Copeland.
Copeland is off to UMass in the fall to study engineering. He will join the track team and the decathlon may be in his future, but he was always remember his remarkable performance in his senior year at the Western Mass championships.
"After I was finished with all my events, I got to take deep breath, I was relaxed and I was happy with all my performances, it was a good day", says Copeland.
