NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - Northampton's girls track team is going after its 3rd straight Western Mass title. If that is going to happen, Blue Devils sophomore Mia Toffoli is going to have to continue her sensational sophomore season. Toffoli is the 22News athlete of the week.
"She has a lot of potential still and she's just starting to tap into that", says Northampton track coach Nate Kraft.
Toffoli is coming off an excellent indoor season where she finished in 4th place at the New England Championships in the 600 meter dash. She will likely run the 800 meters this spring. Remember, Toffoli is still just a sophomore.
"I'm surprised, it was definitely unexpected, but at the same time I'm excited to have two more years to work for PR's (personal records) and more goals", says Toffoli.
The teams' goal never changes.
"To win Western Mass, that's always one of our goals", says Toffoli.
Toffioli explains why Northampton's track team is always the team to beat.
"We don't take any meets lightly, we try to go hard in every meet", says the Northampton sophomore.
The most impressive part of Toffoli's young varsity career is that she gets her best times in the biggest meets.
For a sophomore to go in to big meets and do so well, it's not easy and she handles herself very well", says Kraft.
Off the track, Toffoli is interested in pursuing art. This weekend, Northampton is hosting the Steele Relays.
