SPEEDWAY, Ind. (WISH) - Team Penske’s Ryan Briscoe took the pole on Saturday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Three drivers crashed during qualifying for the Indianapolis 500. Briscoe took the pole with a speed of 226.484 mph, and Adretti Autosport’s James Hinchcliffe came in a close second, driving 226.481 mph.
Ryan Hunter-Raey will also be in the first row for the Indy 500, coming in third on pole day with a speed of 226.240 mph.
Briscoe’s accomplishment is the first pole win he’s had at the Indianapolis 500, though he’s had one other this season and 13 during his career at other tracks. His team has won all poles so far this season.
Ed Carpenter crashed but was OK on pole day. Rookie Bryan Clauson and Oriol Servia also crashed. Those two were also both medically cleared to drive.
