(AP) - Police urged Michigan State fans to show restraint when they celebrate the Spartans' Final Four appearance Saturday night.

According to Michigan State's Final Four Web page, East Lansing Police said they will have reinforcements ready in case revelers in downtown, or on campus, turn rowdy after Michigan State faces Connecticut in the national semifinal. They aren't expecting trouble but will be prepared, police said.

"We are hoping to not have any problems," East Lansing police Lt. Kevin Daley said. "But we know we have to plan for any occasion."

The game will be at Detroit's Ford Field, about a 90-mile drive from campus.

East Lansing dealt with a riot after Michigan State's Final Four appearance in 1999 and had a smaller-scale disturbance after a semifinal game in 2005. But large celebrations after Final Four appearances in 2000 and 2001 were mostly peaceful.

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo, in an e-mailed message to campus this week, thanked students for their support and reminded them of their responsibilities.

"As fellow members of Team MSU, I ask you to also be aware of your role and responsibility for publicly conveying what it means to be a Spartan," the e-mail read. "... Let's celebrate. Let's do it with class."

Michigan State has set up several events for fans in the Detroit area but also has options for those remaining near campus.

The Breslin Center will show Saturday's game on big screen TVs. Breslin will remain open for the second semifinal game between North Carolina and Villanova.
