EAST LONGMEADOW - In the biggest upset of the 2012 WPSL Elite season, the New England Mutiny (4-5-2) defeated the Boston Breakers (9-3-0) by a 2-1 score on the strength of two extra-time goals at East Longmeadow H.S.
T he victory is the first for one of the "amateur" teams over a fully professional side in WPSL Elite this year, and the second occasion New England got points from a contest vs. a former Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) side. The Mutiny tied with the Western New York Flash (6-1-3) by a 3-3 score on June 24th.
It looked like the Mutiny were going to drop their second straight decision to "pro" competition as time winded down on the clock. However, new signing Tiffany Weimer would run on to a through ball past the Breakers defense, and deposited the game-tying goal past Boston goalkeeper Alice Binns with her right foot inside the far post.
A quick re-start in the Breakers' final third just moments later was started by Weimer, who sent in Becca Mays down the right flank. Mays would deliver a textbook cross and substitute Taleen Dimirdjian would run on to the ball, slamming her shot home for the game-winning goal in front of 1,031 fans.
