UMass loses thriller to Ohio 37-34

FOXBORO, Mass. (AP) - Beau Blankenship carried 43 times for 269 yards and three touchdowns to lead unbeaten Ohio to a 37-34 victory Saturday over winless Massachusetts in a Mid-American Conference thriller.

The Bobcats, 5-0 for the first time since 1968 and playing their conference opener, trailed UMass (0-5, 0-2) 27-20 entering the fourth quarter. Ohio then scored 17 straight points before UMass quarterback Mike Wegzyn hit Alan Williams on an 11-yard touchdown. It was the last of four touchdown passes for Wegzyn, who completed 27 of 51 passes for 373 yards. But UMass got no closer.

For Blankenship, this was his fifth straight 100-yard running game. Bobcats quarterback Tyler Tettleton, who missed last week's Norfolk State game with an injury, returned in style. He completed 15 of 27 passes, good for 229 yards and two touchdowns. That included a 41-yard touchdown pass to Chase Cochran just before halftime.
