(WWLP) - The goal of advertisers in the Super Bowl is to make their product standout and increase their revenue. The goal of viewers is to have advertisers make funny commercials.
We'll upon further review, the advertisers did something right, they did have some funny commercials, but after rewatching every commercial, there isn't one product that I will now go out and buy or a new product that I am interested in learning more about, except maybe some of the movies. Here my list of the best Super Bowl commercials, below is my reasoning.
1.
Selling old Gold - MC Hammer and Ed McMahon
2.
Doritos - Crystal Ball
3.
Bridgestone - Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head
4.
Career Builder - Koala Bear punched in the face
5.
Hyundai - Rhymes with Sunday
Hands down the best commercial was the one with MC Hammer and Ed McMahon selling their gold to an online website. There isn't even an argument here. I love the Good Ole' Tom commercials as much as anyone, but this company got two big names who have filed for bankruptcy. Then the company got Hammer and McMahon to basically make fun of their own misfortunes to make a quick buck, which ironically is the purpose of these places buying your old gold. It was perfect. I don't have any old gold to sell, but if I did, I'd probably still go to Good Ole' Tom's.
Product placement worked well in the 2nd best commericial, the first Doritos ad, but at no time did it make me say, ummm I really want a bag of Doritos right now, while when Ali Landry first appeared on TV, I was diving into a bag of cool ranch faster than you can say Doritos dust. This low-budget commercial, it really was, I saw the directors interviewed on "The Tonight Show", the other night, was laugh-out-loud funny. The guy playing with his crystal ball and throwing it through the vending machine was priceless.
Number 3 on my list is the Bridgestone commercial with Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head. Seriously guys, who hasn't been in a car with nagging woman and you don't wish her mouth just falls off. Then when Mrs. Potato Head put on the angry eyes, I was in tears, classic stuff. I didn't run out and buy new tires, and in 2 weeks, I guarentee I can say Potato head commercial and people will remember it, but when I ask what company it was for, few will know.
Careerbuilder.com places 4th on my list. They had this annoying commercial going and somehow it just drew me in, then they punch a Koala bear in the face and its glasses fall off. Hilarity ensued. I'm sure this got some hits on their website, but this ad didn't make me want a new job, it made me want to watch a Koala bear get punched in the face repeatedly.
Rounding out the top five is the first Hyundai commercial. This is a sleeper pick, I think its funny because its true. The guy in the board meeting says, we'll we won an award so maybe someone will get our name right, its Hyundai like Sunday. That is great because I always thought its name was interchangeable, I always went in between Hyun-die and Hyun-day, now I know. Thanks Hyundai guys and congrats on winning some award I never heard of, nice job. Not going to go out and buy your car though.
The biggest mistake that I was suprised that no advertiser capitalized on is the popularity of Justin Timberlake. This guy is great when he is on SNL, he is marketable across many different demographics, but no one ponied up the money for JT. Shame on you.
One final thought, Bud Light what are you thinking? I'm speaking of the skiing commercial with the 2 guys outside at the lodge drinking Bud Light out of those aluminum bottles. While those bottles are perfect in the summer time, I drank out of them during a 35 degree baseball game last April and felt like my hand was going to get frost bite or that the mositure on the bottles were going to make them stick to my hand like the kids' tongue on the telephone poll in "A Christmas Story." Those bottles are unusable in any temperature less than 60 degrees, let alone on at a ski lodge.
Overall, nice job on the commercials, while I still miss the Bud Bowl, they made me laugh out loud this year and really that's all I care about.
