SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - With temperatures that were just in the 70s and 80s a couple of weeks ago the farthest thing from most of our minds is a big snowstorm. But 15 years ago today it was no joke, we were digging out from over a foot of snow.

It became known as the April Fool's Day Snowstorm. The snow started falling on March 31st and continued into April 1st.

The storm dumped very heavy wet snow on western Massachusetts and was accompanied by strong gusty winds.

Seventeen inches of snow was reported at Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee. The storm caused a considerable amount of damage and led to a number of accidents.

The weight of all the heavy snow brought down trees and power lines causing widespread power outages. States of emergency were even declared in some cities and towns.

The storm even knocked out power to our station taking us off the air for almost a day.

Despite how bad the April Fool's Day Snowstorm was, it still does not compare to what we endured during the October Snowstorm of last year.
