Comparing a Winter Storm to a Blizzard

It's all a matter of wind and visibility

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Blizzard warnings and winter storm warnings have been issued for the Bay State. There are strict conditions that must be met in order for a winter storm to be considered a blizzard.

So let's define a Winter Storm Warning and a Blizzard Warning.

A Winter Storm Warning:

  • At least 6 inches of snow over a 12 hour period

             OR

  • At least 8 inches of snow in a 24 hour period

A Blizzard Warning:

  • Sustained winds or frequent gusts at or above 35 MPH

              AND

  • Considerable falling and/or blowing snow frequently reducing visibility less than 1/4 mile for 3 hours or longer.

As of early Friday morning, Blizzard Warnings took effect for most eastern Massachusetts and Connecticut. Winter Storm Warnings were in effect for all of western Massachusetts through early Saturday afternoon.

While the exact blizzard conditions might NOT be met over western Massachusetts, we are still expecting that at times Friday night and Saturday morning gusts over 35 mph and limited visibility could bring near blizzard conditions.

Regardless of whether we're under a blizzard or winter storm warning, treat this storm seriously. Driving conditions on Friday night and Saturday morning could be particularly dangerous.
