SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - As the snow cleanup continues, school was back in session for the first time since the storm for kids in many districts across western Massachusetts.
The milder weather on Tuesday was an improvement from Monday’s messy mix of snow and rain, but the plowed snow banks and icy sidewalks made it difficult for kids to walk to school.
Near the Milton Bradley School in Springfield, some children resorted to walking in the street; which is especially dangerous during the busy morning commute.
“There's a steep hill, and I saw dozens of kids couldn't walk on the sidewalk. It's brick so it's especially bad,” Martha Dickinson of Springfield said. “I didn't even do that. I toughed it out the sidewalk. I'd rather slip on ice than be hit by a car.”
Many of the snow banks are piled so high on street corners that it would be difficult to see a child walking around the corner.
