January freeze could be in your February bill

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - January is typically our coldest month, but you may be paying for that cold now, in February.

This has certainly been more of a normal cold and snowy winter compared to our mild and almost snowless winter a year ago.

"I know the furnace has been on more than it used to be in these past couple years and it's just colder this year I think," said Robert Rodriguez from Holyoke.

Colder temperatures this winter over last are already making a big difference in your heating bill.

"It was 800 or 1000 [dollars] more on my budget for heating my house this year. It's definitely a colder winter, a longer winter for us and it's not over yet," said Thomas Patrick of Hatfield.

It's possible that your heating expense is about to get much bigger.

In the third week of January we had some very cold air in western Massachusetts. Those dates could have been included on your February heating bill making it the most expensive of the winter.

"I haven't got my latest bill, but I'm expecting it to be considerably higher than I have been paying. I'm lucky I live in a small apartment and I have gas heat," said Susan Downes of Windsor, Connecticut.

IF your January heating bill included through the end of January then it's likely you've already paid for our big January freeze.
