Time to put down lime, winter fertilizer

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The leaves are off the trees, and winter is just a few weeks away. Now, then, is a good time to get your lawn ready for winter.

Peter Funari at Sixteen Acres Garden Center told 22News that it’s the right time to put winter fertilizer and lime down. Lime will help adjust the pH in the soil for next spring.

You should also try and mow your lawn one last time.

“You don't want to scalp the lawn, but you want about two-and-a-half to two inches to get through the winter,” Funari said. “It prevents the blades of grass from matting on themselves when the snow hits them, so in the spring, you'll be a little happier when you rake the lawn and you won't have as much dead grass to rake out.”

It looks like the weather should cooperate if your planning to do some yard work over the next few days. To find out how long the fair weather will last, check out the 22News Storm Team Forecast .
