EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) - It continues to look and feel like fall. Colder weather has arrived and that means it's time to make sure your home is ready for winter, doing so can help save you money on fuel costs.
One of the most important things to do is to keep the cold air from getting inside your home.
“I normally check for drafts on a lot of different areas. In fact I'm just picking up some door bottom which are common to have wear out,” said James McQuillan of Hampden.
You can even get foam insulating sealant in a can. It will help fill in the gaps and cracks and help reduce drafts.
Window insulation kits are also a good idea.
“You have the shrink wraps you can put on the inside. You put double-sided tape around, easy to install. What it does just a common hair dryer pulls it out and gives an inner barrier to hold the heat within your home,” said Rick LaVallee the assistant manager of the East Longmeadow Rocky's.
“Just check to make sure everything is sealed perfectly and do those kinds of things to keep air from coming in. we take the air conditioners out of the windows and do that kind of thing,” said Cindy Porway of East Longmeadow.
It's also a good idea to put foam insulation over your pipes to keep them from freezing and to change the air filter in your furnace for better air flow.
It's a good idea to change the air filter in your furnace at least everything three months but you may want to try and do it once every month.
