A few simple steps could save your lawn

SOUTHWICK, Mass. (WWLP) - As you try avoiding a sun burn with our summer heat, your lawn is dealing with the heat as well.

As the sun beats down on a hot day, your green lawn just sits there drying out and heating up.

"It's starting to dry out now, but it wasn't as bad until recently within the last two weeks…I try to water it about once a week now, that's why it's probably turning brown, and usually at night," said John Consolini of Springfield.

Watering is key to keeping your lawn green, but once a week isn't enough.

Peter Furnari of 16 Acres Garden Center suggests a good deep watering at least every other day.

If you have the ability to water your lawn, don't do it in the middle of the day because that water will evaporate on top of the grass. Best time to water? Between 8 and 10 o’clock in the morning or 4 and 6 o’clock at night.

Watering frequently won't save your lawn completely. Remember... shorter is not better.

You should leave your lawn between 3 and 3.5 inches tall and not cut it too short.

"A short lawn tends to dry out the soil much quicker, which tends to dry out the root system which burns. A longer bladed lawn would tend to shade itself," said Furnari.

If your lawn burns, soaking it with water and raking it could bring it back.

If you're trying to re-seed your lawn, now's not the time. Waiting until august would be best so that the seed doesn't burn.
