SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The Pioneer Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross believes every western Massachusetts home should have a shelter-in-place kit.

The kit is a barrel filled with everything you and your family will need in the event of a power outage. It includes everything from an emergency radio and gallons of water to non perishable food from crackers to applesauce.

“You should have enough supplies so that if we have a power failure, your family is going to be safe and comfortable for at least three days,” said Mary Nathan, Regional Response Manager for the Red Cross.

Nathan told 22News that you can put together a fully-stocked shelter-in-place kit a little at a time over several weeks.

For a complete list of everything you will need, visit the Red Cross website.
