WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - We'll be dealing with snow on the roads soon, and the state wants to keep the roads clear for you. Now, they have a new weapon they call the “ Mega-Plow.”
It was first put into service last year, but didn't get much use.
The plow, which is formally called a “ tow-plow” has earned its nickname due to its size and capacity.
The Mega-Plow can clear snow off two and a half highway lanes with just one pass. A standard plow clears less than one lane.
“Rather than that army of plows or a caravan of plows that folks typically see three, four or five together, this is a lot more efficient for our snow and ice operation,” MassDOT Secretary and CEO Richard Davey said.
One Mega-Plow is already in use in western Massachusetts, with two more on the way.
Because of its size, the plow can't be used on all roads. It will mainly be used on highways like Interstate 91 and the Mass Pike.
