WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The open burning season begins Tuesday in western Massachusetts.

The city of westfield is one of the communities in our area that allows burning. But there are several criteria: anyone wishing to burn must apply for a permit, and then call the day of to make sure conditions are safe.

You also cannot burn anything within 75 feet of a home.

"You can't cause a nuisance, so if the lady next door has breathing problems and the smoke is going into her house, you're not going to be able to burn, and there's certain sections of Westfield where there's no way you could be 75 feet away from a dwelling,” Westfield Deputy Fire Chief Patrick Egloff said.

It is important to check with your local fire department to see what you can burn. Regardless of where you are, however, leaves and construction material can never be burned.
