Residents waking up to heavy snow

GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Residents in Franklin County are waking up to almost two feet of snow.

When many people went to bed on Friday night, there were only about 5-7 inches of snow on the ground. Now, however, it's a different story.

Most sidewalks are under almost two feet of snow and many cars are buried, as the snow continued to come down Saturday morning.

With the strong gusts of wind, it is making shoveling and plowing very difficult. Many residential streets and parking lots have not been plowed yet, making it for a difficult walk out of your front door.

Most people followed the drive ban, so plow trucks were able to get their work started during overnight hours.

Friday night, everything in downtown Greenfield, except for a few gas stations, closed early so that people could get home.

Still, the snow didn't stop some families from taking an evening walk before conditions got worse and planning their Saturday morning snow activities.

“Didn't see any snow last year. Take the little one sledding, have a good time. We used to ski at Northfield Mountain, cross country, Berkshire East, Always loved skiing, snowmobiling, sliding,” Thomas Lively of Greenfield said.

A safety tip for you on Saturday morning from Greenfield Public Safety Commissioner Gary Longley: Make sure snow is not covering your furnace exhaust vent. Your furnace does not work properly if the vent is covered.
