Snow, sleet mix adds to snowy season
This winter we've had around 51 inches of snow recorded in Chicopee which is about 2 inches more than a normal year and certainly more than we had last year.
Just because spring begins tomorrow doesn't mean that the snow stops falling. Even in the month of March we usually average around 8.6" of snow. But with less than average snowfall so far this month(only 2 inches before Tuesday), we'll certainly be getting close to average snow by the end of this storm.
Getting into April we usually only get a few inches with very little snow expected and May is pretty much the month that we can rule out any significant snow, although a light dusting is certainly possible.
This storm we expect areas east and west of the Connecticut River to see the most snow.
There are a few factors that bring the hills to the east and west of the Connecticut River more snow. With increased elevation, that generally brings cooler temperatures which allows that drier snow to accumulate faster on top of colder ground. While temperature is a factor, the topography of the land can also play a role.
As bands of snow head up over the hills, that increase in elevation can squeeze out more snow over those hills in an affect called "upsloping."
This doesn't just happen over the Berkshires, but over the hills of eastern Hampden, Hampshire and Franklin county as well.
