Storm readiness at the last minute

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - The first flakes of a major Nor'easter weren't enough to keep Hampshire County residents from doing their normal morning routine.

Friday morning in Northampton was a little more low-key than usual with a Nor'easter bearing down on western Massachusetts.

Still, that didn't stop people from doing what they normally do, like kick-starting the day at Bruegger's Bagels on Main Street.

Steve Grden of Southampton says that he is excited about the potential for heavy snowfall.

“I love the winter, I love the snow. I like to ski so it's great, I love it. I'm glad to be out here,” he said.

But for Smith College Students Charlotte Dzialo and and Katie Dempsey, being out for a jog wasn't a choice.

“We don't exactly have a choice. We have track practice and my coach said because it's not snowing we need to do stuff. We woke up at 6:30AM,” they said.

When you're talking about measuring snowfall from a typical winter storm, you might want to use a ruler, but for this storm it might be more appropriate to use a yardstick. That's why it's a good idea to be prepared.

These are some items you should have in a home emergency kit. A first aid kit, batteries, a flashlight and some duct tape. 22News did find people many last-minute storm preparations, whether it was making a last minute grocery store run to stock up on snacks, or topping off that gas tank.

“My husband took the day off, so he's doing all the shopping and hopefully we will make it home fine,” Dale Bliss of Sunderland said.

With heavier snow expected for late Friday, Northampton City Offices closed at Noon in an effort to clear the roads and make way for the plows.
