Temperatures providing big help with snow melt

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - After our big snowstorm over the weekend, Mother Nature is giving us a needed break on Tuesday; providing warmth allowing the snow to melt.

Temperatures spent much of the day near 40 degrees, and the mild weather helped to bring the snow down off roofs, and melted lots of the snow in the street.

After spending much of the weekend shoveling snow, roof raking, and plowing out, the mild weather Tuesday provided some snow melting help while making conditions more comfortable to be in.

“It just makes it a lot more mild to actually deal with weather-wise, but it does make the snow heavier, so work-wise it makes it a little tougher. But as far as dealing with the weather, it's a little nicer," Jon Boren of West Springfield said.

Normal temperatures this time of year are in the mid 30’s. Tuesday’s highs were about five degrees warmer than that across western Massachusetts, with even some mini-breaks of blue sky amongst the clouds.

While these warmer temperatures will weaken ice, the surface was still strong enough for swans to have a leisurely walk across it in Forest Park on Tuesday.
