Thousands in Berkshires still coping without power

Restoration may still take a long time for some

NEW MARLBOROUGH, Mass. (WWLP) - Thousands of people in Berkshire County still have no power, two days after western Massachusetts experienced our highest winds from what was then Hurricane Sandy.

In the southern Berkshire County town of New Marlborough, more than 200 National Grid customers still have no electricity, and full restoration may take until Saturday, according to estimates on the utility company’s website.

Trees hang on power lines in some areas, and people who we spoke with that had no power said that it’s an inconvenience, but they were prepared.

One family in New Marlborough is using a wood fireplace to stay warm, and had stocked-up plenty of water in anticipation of the storm.

Berkshire County and the Hilltowns of western Hampden and Hampshire Counties saw the worst of the area’s power outages, as wind gusts reached their highest levels there.

In addition to New Marlborough, some of the most significant outages that persisted on Wednesday were in the nearby towns of Sandisfield and Tolland.
