Tips to keep your pet safe in the summer heat

(WWLP) - The heat can be hard on humans, but don’t forget it can also be dangerous for your pets. Here are some tips to keep your animals safe during this hot weather.

  • NEVER leave your pet in the car: The temperature inside can reach up to nearly 120 degrees in just an hour’s time, and can rise even higher after that.

  • Make sure your animals have lots of water. Just like people, they can become dehydrated really quickly during hot weather.

  • Keep pets inside on extremely hot days. When it’s hot and they’re outside, be sure they have some cooler, shady areas to go to.

  • Be sure that you are exercising your pet when it is coolest. If you have a dog, take him or her for a walk in the early morning hours or in the evening.

  • Contact your veterinarian if you are worried that your pet may be suffering from heat stroke. (For symptoms, visit rspca.org.uk )

  • Remember your pet can get sunburned- ask your veterinarian about sunscreens that are safe for your furry friend.

  • Excess hair can make your hot pet even hotter; be sure that he or she is groomed of any excess.

  • Be careful to secure windows and screens to prevent pets from falling.
