HAMPDEN, Mass. (WWLP) - Winds over 50 mph early Thursday morning brought down some trees, one of which fell a little too close for comfort for one family.
A strong storm system moved through late Wednesday night and early Thursday bringing strong gusty winds and heavy downpours. The strongest winds gusted to more than 50 mph in some areas.
In Palmer there was a wind gust of 53 mph and in Westfield the wind gusted to 52 mph.
The winds brought trees down across the area. One of those trees came down on a home on Woodland Drive in Hampden.
“Then I heard the crash and the whole house shook and when I got out of bed I looked up at my ceiling and there was a branch coming through the bedroom ceiling,” said Anne Marie Sias.
When the large pine tree fell it destroyed the deck on this house but things could have been much worse.
“Well the deck is gone and the cars are damaged. It's just crazy how that huge tree just missed actually hurting somebody... material things don't really matter it's people that matter,” said Casey Spear.
The wind also brought a large tree down on Sumner Avenue in Springfield. At one point more than 3,000 customers were left without power across the area.
