CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Seventy-seven tractor trailers full of food, bottled water, cots, and other emergency supplies will arrive at Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee on Sunday and Monday, in anticipation of the arrival of the remnants of Hurricane Sandy .
The U.S. Air Force announced Friday afternoon that a FEMA staging team will arrive at the base on Saturday before the supplies arrive.
Westover is used as FEMA’s staging point for the entire New England region, and has been used in that capacity two times already.
Lt. Col. James Bishop of Westover Public Affairs said that they are ready to accommodate those emergency workers. “This event is unique because of the number of trailers and FEMA presence, but this is also another facet of what we do best: stage and move massive amounts of cargo anywhere in the world,” he said in a statement sent to 22News.
We are expected to see the effects of Sandy as early as Sunday night, and she is not forecast to move completely out of the Mid Atlantic and Northeast until Thursday morning. For the latest on Sandy’s path, check out our Tropical Tracker tool.
