Warmest spring ever for parts of New England

AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) - Meteorological spring runs from March through May. The numbers are in and it was another record breaking season.

After a record breaking winter, it looks like spring is following suit as being one of the warmest on record.

Climate scientists at UMASS Amherst studied the average temperatures for this spring, and it was the warmest spring ever for Boston and Worcester and the second warmest spring on record in Amherst.

Our warm winter actually had an affect on our warm spring, because there was little snow to keep the ground cool we were able to warm up much more quickly.

"So when you take the warm weather pattern like we had, the cooler than normal temperatures across the tropical pacific and then put all those short term factors on top of a long term warming climate, now you're more likely to break records,” said Michael Rawlins from the Climate System Research Center at UMASS Amherst .

Rawlins told 22News that even if we have normal temperatures the rest of the year, 2012 could go down as the warmest year on record.

This pattern of a record warm winter followed by a record spring doesn't concern everyone.

"In New England things change all the time. We could have a rough winter this year and the following year mild so everything kind of balances out. I'm not really too concerned," said John Hess of Westfield.

While our warm winter helped to contribute to a warm spring, Rawlins told 22news he does not believe a warm spring will impact how warm we are this coming summer.
