SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - We are now less than two weeks away from Christmas, and there's still no snow on the ground. So what are our chances of getting a White Christmas?
13 days out, it's still too early to accurately forecast whether we'll have snow on Christmas Day. Until we get a little closer, the best tool we can use to determine our chances of a White Christmas is to look at history.
To determine our chances, it really depends on how you define the term. The most accepted definition of a White Christmas is to have an inch of snow on the ground on Christmas Day.
Under that definition, according to the National Climatic Data Center , our historical probability of a White Christmas is between 50 and 75 percent. The highest chances of a White Christmas in western Massachusetts occur over the Berkshires.
Like the song suggests, it is something that many people here are dreaming about.
"Honestly looking back when I was younger I don't really remember it being important or thinking about having a White Christmas, but now I want nothing but a White Christmas," STCC student Rachel Verkler said.
Nationwide, the best chances for a White Christmas are in parts of New Hampshire, Maine the Upper Midwest, and the mountains out west.
