SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - We all know that with our transition to winter brings colder and colder temperatures.
To make matters worse, we have the wind.
"The wind brings the temperature down it makes you feel a lot more [cold] than you normally would, but it's almost December. I think we're ready for some cold weather. Not that I like it, but you have to deal with it," said Gerry Philips of Springfield.
Analyzing the wind speed and the cold air temperatures we can calculate the wind chill temperature. The wind chill is the temperature it feels like.
Assuming you're wrapped up, the wind chill has the greatest affect on areas of your body exposed to the wind like your hands, nose, ears and face.
With air temperatures in the mid 30s, even a steady breeze can make it feel 10-15 degrees colder as the wind chill chart in the "photos" tab shows, so bundle up!
"We put on a couple extra layers. Today I’ve got three or four on, they've [her children] got three or four on. Cover the ears. We're ready for it," said Christina Pellegrino of Springfield.
Knowing the wind chill isn't just about estimating your comfort, wind chills below freezing even in a short amount of time can lead to frost bite or worse.
So when you're planning what to wear the next day, knowing the potential wind chill temperature may mean the difference in staying warm or being uncomfortably cold.
"As long as you dress warm for the weather it's fantastic. I've got layers of clothes on, I don't notice the difference at all," said Peter Frodema of Hampden.
Scattered showers and sprinkles this afternoon into tonight. Warmer with thunderstorms tomorrow.
