DANA POINT, Calif. (NBC/VNR) - A phenomenon at sea and quite an incredible sight off the coast of Dana Point, Calif., happened when more than 1,000 dolphins put on a spectacular show for passengers and crew aboard Captain Dave's Dolphin and Whale Safari.

The pod of dolphins could be seen in the distance frolicking in the water.

It's not known what caused them to make a drastic move and stampede directly toward the boat, but it's a sight these people won't soon forget.

In an amazing display of speed and agility, the dolphins were traveling in their fastest mode, known as porpoising.

Dana Point has the greatest density of dolphins per square mile and can be seen throughout the year -- sometimes in herds numbering more than 10,000.

Passengers were also able to get a unique perspective of the dolphins gliding through the water from an underwater camera.
