SAN DIEGO (NBC/KNSD) - It started as simply a photograph of a sailor kissing a nurse at the end of World War II in 1945.

Now what may just be the most famous kiss in U.S. history has a new home in California.

After a 2,800-mile trip that began in New Jersey, the newly cast bronze statue of the salient smooch arrived in San Diego Monday morning.

The 25-foot-tall, 15,000-pound piece of art cost $1 million to make and replaces a form-core version.

This new bronze version will be installed along San Diego's waterfront in the next couple days.
