SANDY, Ore. (LIN Media/KOIN) - A dog's trip onto an icy lake turned into a rescue mission in Oregon.

Mango ran into some trouble out on Hope Lake. The dog was found with his hind legs stuck in a combination of mud and ice about 40 feet from the shore.

With a neighbor's boat, firefighters used axes and shovels to cut through the ice to retrieve Mango.

How the dog got trapped on the ice is still a mystery.

"You know, I've never known him to be in the water you know I really haven't. I don't know what the heck he was doing out there. I mean he does his own thing He usually has a curled tail he's feeling pretty humble right about now," said Tim Hathaway, Mango's owner.

Mango did suffer from hypothermia but otherwise he's just fine.
