SAN DIEGO (CNN/KFMB) - Passengers aboard a whale-watching tour boat are leaving their experience with a whale of a tale.

A pod of about 20- to 25 gray whales appeared just off the coast of San Diego last week.

A couple visiting from Oklahoma City took these amazing photos of the gentle giants of the sea.

The Birch Aquarium executive director said it's normal to see a lot of whales around this time of year.

It's mating season for the whales as the migrate down to Baja California.

Local marine experts say this might be the largest group of whales ever seen in the area.
