VATICAN CITY (NBC/APTN) - Within an hour of white smoke signaling the election of a new pope, a seagull landed on the Sistine Chapel's chimney.

The crowd in Saint Peter's Square standing in the rain was able to see the bird on giant TVs.

One priest in England told the BBC that the seagull was a sign of God.

The bird spent several minutes on the chimney and became a Twitter sensation -- much like the chimney itself.

For a while, the seagull had the attention of the world -- with news cameras focusing on its every move and the signal being sent live around the world.
