BOSTON, Mass. (AP) - Massachusetts cities and towns together with a handful of Mega Million ticket buyers in Massachusetts are quite a bit richer even though none won the record-breaking jackpot.
Massachusetts Lottery spokeswoman Beth Breshanan said Saturday that five players won $250,000 payouts by matching the drawing's five numbers but missing the Mega Ball number. That means they were just one number from winning a share of the $640 million grand prize.
The winning Massachusetts tickets were sold in Lowell, East Bridgewater, Somerville, Reading and Watertown.
The big winners, however, were cities and towns which will share about $16.4 million in profit generated from the sale of tickets worth $39 million in the state.
Three grand-prize winning tickets were sold in Illinois, Kansas and Maryland, giving their owners a share of the largest lottery jackpot in history.
