LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Drive down Columbia Street in downtown Lafayette, Ind. and you may wonder, who is Shayla, and did she say yes?
Lafayette resident Joe Broussard's creative proposal centered on the streetside comic strip called "The Window."
"The Window," housed on windows on the corner of 5th Street and Columbia Avenue in Lafayette, features two cats named Sam and Maze who offer new jokes and observations to area residents about once a week.
Broussard called on "The Window's" creator, Ryan Bidlack or "Bids," to help pop the question to his girlfriend, Shayla Snyder.
"I live two doors down and we walk down every week, every time we're in town and it's usually something pretty funny. I was sitting watching TV and it just kind of popped into my head," Broussard said.
Bids was getting ready to change the window but was intrigued by the idea of Sam and Maze trying their hand at a marriage proposal.
After the comic strip was up, Broussard and Snyder headed to dinner with friends.
"I said, 'Hey, have they changed it lately?' Shayla was so hungry she said, 'Come on let's go," Broussard said.
Snyder thought they were just headed to dinner. It wasn't until she saw her name on the window that she rounded the corner to get a better look.
"I thought, maybe he knows someone named Shayla. But my name isn't that common. So, I thought, maybe it's me. I thought it was a joke at first," Snyder said.
"She turned around and there was no response at all for a while, just deep breaths and said, is this for real," Broussard said.
"I was completely shocked. I had no idea," Snyder said.
Snyder did say yes to Broussard's marriage proposal. They plan to marry next fall.
As for "The Window," Bids said he plans to change it in the next couple of days. He said it will play off the proposal.
